A Dash of Ausum

The benefits of tea bags

By December 2, 2017 One Comment

“Accident is the name of the greatest of all inventors.” – Mark Twain

The humble teabag, which might be considered one of the simplest and greatest inventions in our tea obsessed world, was invented by accident! It was in 1908 when an American entrepreneur called Thomas Sullivan decided to sample tea in little bags made of silk to cut down his costs. However his customers assumed they were to be directly dipped in hot water. This simple packaging idea was then improvised upon by a number of bulk tea producers, who tried the same trick with different materials, right from gauze to cellophane. In the present day, most teabags are made of either filter paper, cotton muslin or food grade nylon.  But what are the benefits of tea bags? What was in this little invention that took the tea industry by storm?

The Impact

It’s only because even something as little as this can have a massive impact on the environment. And you. Nylon tea bags, though food grade, are still synthetic in nature. They can release toxic chemicals when dunked in hot water. What’s worse – Nylon is practically non-biodegradable, and takes a minimum of 30 to 40 years to decompose. Paper too, isn’t the next best option. Research has shown traces of plastic even in paper teabags. And paper does interfere with taste (You’d know that if you’ve drunk juice with a paper straw). All this leaves us with only one option – cotton.

The spirit of Ausum

Ausum Tea is all about bringing you an exciting range of teas and tisanes that are healthy and tasty. But we also believe in the bigger picture, and our sense of responsibility to the people and the environment. So even the little tea bag comes with a background of research. Minimal waste is at the core of our operations. Because of this, we use biodegradable cotton tea bags with paper packaging that will fully decompose. These 100% cotton tea bags are handmade, and are naturally bleached. There is no involvement of any form of chemicals that could potentially end up in our rivers. With our responsibility towards nature, we created a triangle tea bag that would naturally decompose within a 12-month period. They break down so quickly that all it takes is one monsoon cycle for them to go back to where they came from.

Compliance with food laws

Our teabags contain no non-biodegradable sealants or even staple pins that would contribute towards waste. Even the tiny staple pin can be dangerous, as recent research proves. This article in The Times of India shows how staple pins in teabags can be harmful to the tea drinker. They can react with the tea, especially when heated in a microwave. They are made of galvanised iron, which can cause damage to the stomach lining. Swallowing the staple pin by mistake can be dangerous in other ways. It is due to this that the manufacturing, distribution, sale, storage and importing of stapled tea bags were ordered to be discontinued under Section (15) FSS Act, 2006, by the Food Authority, starting January 2018. Unsafe packaging materials should also not be used, says the Food Authority of India.

Empowering our workforce

As we do to the environment, we have a responsibility towards our society as well. This is one of the reasons upskilling is at the core of our people proposition. The manufacturing team consists of strong and hardworking women, who previously used to be domestic labour. But now, they are entrepreneurs in their own ways. Single mothers and breadwinners, these women are soon becoming role models in society. From not being able to even read their local language, these women have been trained in a way that now, they are aware and in control of the manufacturing process. It’s our way of bringing them under an organized workforce and contributing to India’s GDP.

Fresh and honest

Honest and ethics is what we lay our foundations on. We source our ingredients without harming the ecosystem. We use fresh organic, local produce and do not process them artificially. Ausum Tea comes with no preservatives or artificial sweeteners. We firmly believe that convenience shouldn’t come at a cost to the environment.
